MONTREAL – Eight members of the McGill men's hockey team are among a 23-player roster selected to play for the "Quebec University All-Stars" in a showcase game against the Montreal Canadiens top prospects. Scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard, Que., this event will mark the conclusion of the Habs rookie camp.
The stands will not be open to the public due to COVID restrictions. The game will not be streamed but the results can be followed online at
LIVE GAME STATS.
The all-star squad is composed of players from each of the three Quebec-based U SPORTS programs that compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference (OUA). Concordia has eight players on the squad, and seven others are from the UQTR Patriotes. All 23 players are products of the Canadian Hockey League, with 17 from the QMJHL, four from the WHL and two from the OHL
Among the goaltenders is McGill freshman
Alexis Shank from Laval, Que., who attended the Habs rookie camp in 2019 and merited the win in a
7-3 decision over the Quebec University All-stars on Sept. 10, 2019. He played the full 60 minutes and kicked out 21 of 24 shots, including a penalty shot save off UQTR forward
Mathieu Boucher. Shank led all CHL goalies with 36 wins in 2019-20.
The three McGillians on defence are led by sophomore
Scott Walford of Coquitlam, B.C., a third round draft pick of the Canadiens in 2017. He will be joined by another NHL prospect in
Jacob Golden, a sophomore from Toronto, who was a fifth-round selection by the Minnesota Wild in 2017.
Also on the blue line is sophomore
Will Warm of West Vancouver, B.C., who played four seasons in the WHL, with Edmonton and Victoria.
Heading a group of four forwards is McGill team captain
Samuel Tremblay, a fifth-year senior from St. Basile le Grand, Que. He is joined by senior
Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash., sophomore
Eric Uba of Kitchener, Ont., and
Caiden Daley, a freshman from Winnipeg.
The all-star squad will be guided by
Marc-André Element, head coach of the Concordia Stingers. His associate coaches will be new McGill bench boss
David Urquhart and UQTR's
Marc-Étienne Hubert.
The Canadiens prospects will be handled by the Laval Rocket coaching staff, under the guidance of head coach
Jean-François Houle, along with assistant coaches
Martin Laperrière,
Kelly Buchberger and goaltender coach
Marco Marciano.
The three university teams officially opened training camp last week in their respective arenas, while the Canadiens main training camp is slated to begin on Sept. 22 at the Bell Sports Complex.
McGill will play six preseason contests, beginning with a visit from archrival Queen's on Oct. 13 in a 7 p.m. start at McConnell Arena. The Stingers will also be opening their preseason schedule on Oct. 13 when they confront UQTR in Trois-Rivieres. A few weeks later, McGill will be the guest at Concordia's regular OUA season opener on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
