MONTREAL — Xavier Fortin and Charles-Antoine Dumont powered the McGill offence with three points apiece as the Redbirds struck four times in the opening period en route to a 6–2 victory over the visiting Royal Military College Paladins in OUA men's hockey, Sunday, at McConnell Arena, the final outing before the December exam and holiday break.

It was the ninth consecutive victory over RMC for the Redbirds, who improved to  83-10-4 overall since the teams first met way back in 1892. Over those 97 meetings, McGill has now outscored RMC by a 500-200 margin.

A total of 67 penalty minutes were assessed, including 49 to RMC. The Redbirds went 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Paladins were 2-for-4.

Fortin scored twice, including a power-play marker, and added an assist, while Dumont netted a pair of goals and set up another to pace McGill's attack. The Redbirds held a 36–23 advantage in shots and improved to 9-5-2, moving into sole possession of fourth place in the tightly packed OUA East. RMC dropped to 2-16-0.

McGill jumped out quickly, with Dumont scoring at 0:39 before Gilbert and Fortin added goals to make it 3–0 by the eight-minute mark. Dumont then struck again on the power play at 9:37.

"It was important to have that kind of a start, after two consecutive losses," said McGill head coach David Urquhart. "We knew that RMC's been playing really well lately. They beat Ottawa last week and had a one goal loss at UQTR (Saturday) but they played yesterday and we had the day off. And we took advantage of that, especially in the first 10 minutes, scoring those four goals. That's what you need to do in those games and the guys executed really well at the start. It was a really nice bonus to get those power-play goals. We've had a lot of PP chances lately, but haven't been able to convert."

RMC replied with two power-play goals from William Gallant — one late in the first period and another midway through the second — but McGill continued to control the game. Fortin added his second of the night at 0:57 of the third, and Damen Boose rounded out the scoring at 11:47.

McGill goaltender Benoit Forget, a freshman, made 21 saves for the win. RMC starter Ethan Morrow allowed three early goals on 10 shots and lasted only until the 7:10 mark of the opening frame before giving way to Michael Davis, who stopped 23 of 26 shots in relief.

After the game, the Redbirds were treated to a potluck dinner in advance of the upcoming holidays, organized by the player's families and girlfriends. 

"We had something like 50 parents here and it was a really special event," said Urquhart, with eyes wide at the array of food served in the Alumni Lounge. "It's really nice to bring everybody together as a family. We do this every year after our final game of the first semester. I thank the player's parents and the girlfriends that support our team in many different ways which doesn't get acknowledged enough. They've sacrificed a lot in their lives so that their sons can have an opportunity to play here."

McGill now has an 11-9 overall record including the preseason and will resume play in the new year with two non-conference games in the Maritimes, beginning Jan. 3 at UNB (16-7)  in the annual Pete Kelly Cup. The next day, they have a matchup in Moncton (15-7) against the Aigles Blues. Meanwhile, RMC visits Union College for an exhibition game on Jan. 3 before returning to league play Jan. 10 at Concordia.

REDBIRDS RAP: The McGill men's hockey team improved its all-time overall record to 1591-1438-187 in 3,215 contests since the inaugural game on Jan. 31 1877, including a 1206-1062-127 mark against Canadian university teams... Team captain Alexandre Gagnon, who missed his fourth regular season rendezvous of the season with an undisclosed injury, is expected to be back in the lineup in early January.  A master's student in kinesiology, who hails from Gatineau, Que., he has a 29-43-72 career record in 148 games overall since joining the Redbirds in 2021

McGill domine les Paladins dans un match marqué par de nombreuses pénalités

Fortin et Dumont marquent chacun deux buts alors que les Redbirds remportent une victoire 6-2 avec 2 buts sur 8 en supériorité numérique

MONTRÉAL — Xavier Fortin et Charles-Antoine Dumont ont mené l'attaque de McGill avec trois points chacun, alors que les Redbirds ont marqué quatre fois en première période pour remporter une victoire de 6-2 contre les Paladins du Collège militaire royal, dimanche, à l'aréna McConnell, lors du dernier match avant les examens de décembre et les vacances.

Il s'agissait de la neuvième victoire consécutive des Redbirds contre le CMR, qui ont amélioré leur fiche globale à 83-10-4 depuis la première rencontre entre les deux équipes en 1892. Au cours de ces 97 rencontres, McGill a maintenant dominé le CMR par une marge de 500-200.

Au total, 67 minutes de pénalité ont été infligées, dont 49 au RMC. Les Redbirds ont marqué 2 buts sur 8 en supériorité numérique, tandis que les Paladins en ont marqué 2 sur 4.

Fortin a marqué deux fois, dont un but en supériorité numérique, et a ajouté une passe décisive, tandis que Dumont a marqué deux buts et en a préparé un autre pour mener l'attaque de McGill. Les Redbirds ont dominé 36-23 au chapitre des tirs au but et ont amélioré leur fiche à 9-5-2, se hissant seuls au quatrième rang dans la division Est de l'OUA, où la course est serrée. Le CMR a vu sa fiche passer à 2-16-0.

McGill a rapidement pris les devants, Dumont marquant à 0:39 avant que Gilbert et Fortin n'ajoutent des buts pour porter la marque à 3-0 après huit minutes de jeu. Dumont a ensuite frappé à nouveau en avantage numérique à 9:37.

« Il était important de prendre un tel départ après deux défaites consécutives », a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, David Urquhart. « Nous savions que le CMR jouait très bien ces derniers temps. Ils ont battu Ottawa la semaine dernière et ont perdu d'un but à l'UQTR (samedi), mais ils ont joué hier et nous avions un jour de repos. Nous en avons profité, surtout dans les 10 premières minutes, en marquant ces quatre buts. C'est ce qu'il faut faire dans ce genre de match et les gars ont très bien joué dès le début. Ces buts en avantage numérique ont été un bonus très appréciable. Nous avons eu beaucoup d'occasions en avantage numérique ces derniers temps, mais nous n'avons pas réussi à les convertir. »

Le CMR a répliqué avec deux buts en avantage numérique de William Gallant, l'un à la fin de la première période et l'autre au milieu de la deuxième, mais McGill a continué à contrôler le match. Fortin a ajouté son deuxième but de la soirée à 0:57 de la troisième période, et Damen Boose a complété le score à 11:47.

Le gardien de but de McGill, Benoit Forget, un étudiant de première année, a effectué 21 arrêts pour remporter la victoire. Le gardien titulaire du CMR, Ethan Morrow, a encaissé trois buts en début de match sur 10 tirs et n'a tenu que jusqu'à 7:10 de la première période avant de céder sa place à Michael Davis, qui a arrêté 23 des 26 tirs en relève.

Après le match, les Redbirds ont eu droit à un souper-partage organisé par les familles et les copines des joueurs en prévision des fêtes de fin d'année.

« Il y avait environ 50 parents et c'était un événement vraiment spécial », a déclaré Urquhart, les yeux écarquillés devant la multitude de plats servis dans le salon des anciens élèves. « C'est vraiment agréable de réunir tout le monde comme une famille. Nous faisons cela chaque année après notre dernier match du premier semestre. Je remercie les parents et les petites amies des joueurs qui soutiennent notre équipe de nombreuses façons différentes, ce qui n'est pas suffisamment reconnu. Ils ont fait beaucoup de sacrifices dans leur vie pour que leurs fils aient la chance de jouer ici. »

McGill affiche désormais un bilan global de 11-9, pré-saison comprise, et reprendra le jeu en début d'année avec deux matchs hors-conférence dans les Maritimes, à partir du 3 janvier à l'UNB (16-7) dans le cadre de la Pete Kelly Cup annuelle. Le lendemain, l'équipe affrontera les Aigles Blues à Moncton (15-7). Pendant ce temps, le CMR se rendra à l'Union College pour un match amical le 3 janvier avant de reprendre le championnat le 10 janvier à Concordia.

REDBIRDS RAP : L'équipe masculine de hockey de McGill a amélioré son bilan global à 1591-1438-187 en 3 215 matchs depuis son premier match le 31 janvier 1877, dont un bilan de 1206-1062-127 contre des équipes universitaires canadiennes... Le capitaine de l'équipe, Alexandre Gagnon, qui a raté son quatrième rendez-vous de la saison régulière en raison d'une blessure non divulguée, devrait être de retour dans l'alignement au début du mois de janvier. Étudiant à la maîtrise en kinésiologie, originaire de Gatineau, au Québec, il affiche un bilan de 29-43-72 en 148 matchs depuis qu'il s'est joint aux Redbirds en 2021.
