SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS: McGill men fourth, women seventh after Day 2

VICTORIA, BC — After winning four medals on the opening day of the U SPORTS national championships, McGill swimmers came up just short on Day 2 with three fourth-place finishes at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Thus far, the meet, which features short-course preliminaries and long-course finals, has resulted in McGill swimmers qualifying for 27 final swims across six individual events with one day of competition remaining.

The Martlets had a total of five women in the backstroke final and consolation races. Leading the pack was freshman Daphne Danyluk of Rivière-des-Prairies, Que., who placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.99) and sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:20.76).

Danyluk also guided the 4x200 freestyle relay to an eighth-place result Leading of the foursome was Carley Dove-McFalls, followed by Gabriella Doueihy, Danyluk and Grace Valihora.

On the men's side, Clement Secchi, a sophomore from France, posted fourth-place results in both, the 100 back (56.65) and the 50 fly (25.07).

Secchi also guided McGill to a fifth-place finish in the 4x200 free relay (7:34.75). That group featured David Brenken in leadoff, followed by Secchi, William Simpson and Alex Younes.

Younes, an engineering sophomore from Montreal, also collected an eighth-place result in the 200 fly (2:06.61).

Adrian Goin, an engineering junior, was fifth in the 50 fly (25.09), followed in eighth by senior Samuel Wang (25.60) of Sherbrooke, Que.

Marius Collin, a third-year architecture major from France, was the team's lone sprinter in the high profile "splash-and-dash", placing sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.56).  Freshman Eric Pelletier of Baie d'Urfé, Que., made his national debut in the 200 breaststroke final and was eighth (2:23.00).

Heading into the final round of the three-day meet, McGill sits fourth in the men's division with 530 points, certainly within reach of third-place Toronto, which has 537.

On the women's side, the Martlets are seventh with 212.5 points, some 28.5 behind sixth-place Ottawa.

"I think that coming into the meet we were hoping for something similar to last year or slightly better," said McGill head coach Peter Carpenter. "With the men finishing fourth last year we certainly have our hearts set on the top three, but we remain realistic regarding how difficult it will be to dislodge UBC, Calgary or Toronto.  For the women, a seventh-place finish is not out of the question but we will need to pull up our socks a bit for that to happen."

After wrapping up the varsity season, the top McGill swimmers are expected to be heading to the Olympic Trials in Toronto in next month.
