Football's Seinet-Spaulding named top athlete as McGillians win 8 awards at FAEQ gala

MONTREAL -- Football player Andrew Seinet-Spaulding of Pierrefonds, Que., spearheaded a group of eight student-athletes from McGill University who won bursaries at the annual Quebec Foundation for Athletics Excellence gala, held online, Tuesday evening.

Seinet-Spaulding, a fifth-year social work senior who merited $2,500, won the Metras Trophy last year as the most outstanding lineman in the country. The six-foot, 292-pound defensive tackle was a sixth-round selection (52nd overall) by Calgary in the 2020 CFL Draft.

Other athletic excellence award recipients from McGill included hockey's Nikolas Brouillard ($2,000), an economics senior from St. Hilaire, Que., swimmers Daphne Danyluk ($2,000), a biology sophomore from Rivière des Prairies, Que., and Clement Secchi ($2,000), a management sophomore who hails from France. Brouillard was voted as the most outstanding defenceman in the country last season, while Danyluk and Secchi were named as the McGill athletes of the year.

A pair of McGillians received academic excellence awards, namely golfer Maggie Li Hong ($2,000), a management sophomore from Lorraine, Que., and rugby's Dylan Havelock ($2,000), a software engineering senior from Ottawa. Both were named to the 2020 Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll.

Major recruitment bursaries, valued at $10,000 apiece, were awarded to McGill basketball freshmen Leonardo De Coninck of St. Raymond, Que., and Sebastien Lamaute of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que.

Overall, $461,000 was awarded to 91 student-athletes from the RSEQ university and CEGEP ranks. That total featured 55 recruitment bursaries, including 31 cheques of $10,000 each, spread out over five years, and 25 others, valued at $3,000 over three years. Major award nominees received merit scholarships of $2,000 each in seven different categories, including academic excellence, athletic prowess and leadership.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event, presented by Fiera Capital and the RDS network, was televised by RDS and simultaneously streamed over the FAEQ Facebook page.
