Sellout for Carnival Game -- No tickets remain for McGill-Concordia matchup

MONTREAL -- A capacity crowd is on tap for a dream matchup when McGill plays host to Concordia in their 18th annual Winter Carnival men's hockey game on Friday, Jan. 10. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.

The final tickets were sold on Thursday afternoon, assuring an advance sellout for the second straight year. The event is slated to be played at  McConnell Arena, a 950-seat facility located at 3883 University (behind Percival Molson Stadium). There will be no tickets sold at the door.

All tickets were purchased online and cost only $20 for adults and $10 for McGill students with an ID card, as well as seniors and McGill staff. Children 12-and under are admitted free.

With the backing of the Management Undergraduate Society, which pre-purchases about 850 tickets every year for the Carnival Game, which long ago become entrenched as the party to attend on campus. McGill's modern-day record in Carnival Game play is 15-2, including a 5-1 mark against Concordia, since the long-standing event was re-born 17 years ago after a two-decade absence. In 223 lifetime meetings since the teams first tangoed in 1975, McGill owns a 106-103-14 record overall, with the Stingers holding a 885-852 edge in goals scored.

This season, the OUA East rivals have split the first two confrontations, with Concordia winning the first confrontation 3-2 in overtime at the Ed Meagher Arena on Oct. 5 and McGill rebounding on home ice for a 5-2 conquest at McConnell Arena on Oct. 26, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Stingers.

Only 11 games remain before playoffs for McGill, which owns a 10-6-1 record and sits four points ahead of the Stingers (7-8-3) who have played one more game. There's not a lot to choose from between the bitter opponents but it may just come down to special teams. McGill ranks 11th among 20 OUA teams in power-play with a 16.2 per cent success rate but their penalty-killing unit is ranked second at 89.7.

Concordia, on the other hand, has the league's 12th-best PP at 16.7 per cent while their PK unit ranks 13th at 79.5.
