MONTREAL -- Fly-half
Monty Weatherall scored a game-high 12 points and
Josh Worden tallied a pair of tries as the McGill University men's rugby team routed visiting Sherbrooke 39-10 at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
Despite the lopsided score, the teams headed into intermission tied at 10-10, then McGill exploded for 29 second-half points.
It was a physical affair and each team was assessed a pair of yellow cards.
McGill registered five trys in the contest, which resulted in a bonus point in the RSEQ standings.
Weatherall, an international development studies freshman from the United Kingdom, kicked three conversions and added a pair of penalty kicks. Other try scorers for the home side were all seniors,
Michael Nwabufo of Ottawa,
Antoine Guay of Verdun, Que., and
Berke Yalin, a fifth-year veteran from Turkey. Teammate
Darren Elias, a management junior from Toronto, rounded out the scoring with a conversion.
The lone try scorer for Sherbrooke was
Jean-Yves Gignac, which was converted by
Remi Archambault.
The players of the game, as selected by the opposing coaches, were Weatherall and Archambault.
McGill, which sits third the the RSEQ conference with a 1-1 record, will travel across town next week to take on
École de technologie supérieure at College Notre Dame in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 29. The ETS Pirhanas are sixth in the seven-team Quebec conference with an 0-2-1 record.
Also on Sept. 29, Sherbrooke (0-2) will host Concordia (2-0) .
