Stingers edge McGill ruggers on final play to win inaugural Hardy Cup

MONTREAL -- Rookie Aidan McMullan scored a try, one conversion and nailed a pair of penalty kicks -- one on the final play -- as Concordia came from behind to edge McGill 23-21 in the men's rugby season opener, Saturday, to capture the inaugural Dave Hardy Cup.

The challice is named after Hardy, who coached at both institutions. He served as bench boss at McGill from 1982 to 1989 and later served as an assistant coach at Concordia.

Flyhalf Monty Weatherall tallied 11 points in a losing cause for McGill, making three penalty-kicks and converting one try. Rounding out the McGill scoring, with one try apiece, was Josh Worden and Andreas Dionisopoulos.

Also scoring tries for Concordia was Kevin Safulko and Jean-Christophe Vinette.

McGill (0-1) will host Sherbrooke (0-1) in their official home opener on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Percival Molson Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Concordia (1-0) plays at Ottawa (1-0) on the same day.
