MONTREAL -- The McGill University varsity swim program has made two major additions to its coaching staff as it prepares for the 2019-20 season in the
new and improved Memorial Pool.
Olympian
Savannah King and two-time McGill record holder
Bradley Crocker will be joining longtime head coach
Peter Carpenter as the varsity squad looks to continue its recent run of success.
"We're thrilled to welcome Savannah and Bradley to our coaching ranks," said Carpenter. "Our swimmers will get to learn from two phenomenal athletes who have proven themselves at the U SPORTS level and beyond."
King, a Scarborough, Ont. native, is one of the country's most-decorated collegiate female swimmers. She is currently the Canadian record holder in the short course 800- and 1,500-metre freestyle races. Over the course of her university career with the UBC Thunderbirds, King won 20 medals and was named the U SPORTS swimmer of the year in 2012, 2013, and 2014. She represented Canada at the Olympics in both 2008 and 2012, as well as various other international competitions.
"I am thrilled to be joining the McGill varsity swimming coaching staff alongside Peter and Bradley, who are both such highly-esteemed coaches," King said. "I'm so looking forward to starting my role in the distance program, and to be a part of the legacy of McGill Swimming."
Crocker holds two McGill records and won four gold medals for the university at the 2018 RSEQ championship meet, helping the program win its first men's title in 15 years. Prior to enrolling at McGill, the Calgary native won three U SPORTS medals while competing for the University of Calgary Dinos.
"I am beyond excited to contribute to the continued success of McGill's swim team alongside Peter and Savannah," said Crocker. "I relish the opportunity to positively impact McGill's swimmers in and out of the pool, and I'm looking forward to big things from our athletes."
Both King (biomechanics) and Crocker (health and exercise physiology) recently completed their master's degrees at McGill and have over 15 years of coaching experience between them at the youth levels.
"Savannah and Bradley are outstanding people who can speak first-hand to the student-athlete experience and our athletes will benefit immensely from that," Carpenter said.
