Weatherall, one of 11 McGill all-stars, named rookie of the year in RSEQ rugby

MONTREAL -- Monty Weatherall earned rookie-of-the-year honours and was one of 11 McGill University players to merit all-star status in voting conducted by the coaches in the RSEQ men's rugby conference.

The six-foot, 183-pound fly-half hails from Amersham, a small town located about 48 kilometres northwest of central London. A 20-year-old freshman majoring in International Development Studies (IDS), Weatherall led McGill in scoring and ranked fourth among league leaders with 47 points in six games. He made 10 conversions and led the conference in penalty kicks with nine. Weatherall is the seventh McGill player in nine years to merit the rookie award, which has been presented since 2001.

Three McGill seniors joined him on the first all-star squad, namely Antoine Guay, a mechanical engineering veteran from Verdun, Que., along with a pair of Ottawa natives, Dylan Havelock, a software engineering student and Michael Nwabufo, an IDS major.

League champion Concordia led all schools with six honourees on the 15-man first team, followed by McGill (4) and ETS (2), along with one player apiece from Montreal, Bishop's and Ottawa.

The second dream team featured a school record seven McGillians among the 15 players named. They included Jeremy Ockomichalak of Los Angeles, Josh Worden of Arlington, Va., Alex Pantis and Karl Hunger, both from Beaconsfield, Que., Thomas Richards from the U.K., Pierre Grison from France and Owen Cumming of Toronto.

The remainder of the second squad was composed of three players apiece from Concordia and Ottawa, while Sherbrooke and Montreal contributed one player each.
