Galloping Gaels gain upperhand over McGill in national rugby quarter-final

MONTREAL -- A half-dozen players scored tries as the second-seeded Queen's Gaels defeated No.7 McGill 36-10 in quarter-final action at the the Canadian university men's rugby championship at Concordia Stadium, Wednesday.

Queen's (1-0), the OUA champions, advances to the national semifinal on Friday, where they will confront No.3 Victoria (1-0), which blanked eighth-seeded UNB 46-0, in a 12 noon kickoff.

McGill (0-1), the RSEQ conference finalists, will cross paths with UNB (0-1), the Atlantic champions, in a consolation round semifinal on Thursday at 2 p.m.

The two sides had to deal with cold, wet and slightly snowy weather conditions which played a factor throughout the 60-minute match.

Queen's struck early as they controlled possession and William Matthews, a freshman from Montreal, opened the scoring with a try, less than four minutes after the opening whistle. Dylan Young, a fifth-year scrum-half from Toronto, kicked his first of three conversions and the Gaels led 7-0.

McGill responded by putting together a long run from Darren Elias but the management junior from Toronto, quickly turned over possession on an unforced fumble. The Gaels couldn't reclaim the field advantage and a 35-yard penalty kick from McGill junior Basil Schincariol narrowed the gap to 7-3..

The Gaels controlled possession for the majority of the half and penalties causes trouble for McGill.

Queen's eventually took advantage of McGill mistakes and out of a second straight scrum as a result of a McGill penalty, the Gaels worked the ball towards the try line and senior Ruairidh MacPhail of Vancouver, B.C., touched down (unconverted) with four minutes remaining to give Queen's a 12-3 advantage heading into halftime.

In the first minute of the second half, junior Connor Jaques, also from Vancouver, kicked the ball down the sideline and eventually pounced on the bouncing ball for an unconverted try as Queen's took a 17-3 lead.

A near half-field run from Cully Quirke, a second-year medical school student from Helsinki, gave the Gaels another unconverted try for a 22-3 advantage with just over 20 minutes remaining.

The Tri-colour added another two converted tries, by Jared Augustin of Newcastle, Ont., in the 19th minute and Hussein Khadr of Kingston, Ont., seven minutes later.

On the final play of the game, McGill broke through as Liam Pantis, an arts & science sophomore from Montreal, scored a try, which was converted by Darren Elias.

The player of the game awards were presented by former McGill rugby coach Dave Hardy to William Matthews of Queen's and McGill's Andreas Dionisopoulos, a microbiology sophomore from Montreal.
