Pantis pots pair as McGill ruggers clip Carabins convincingly

MONTREAL -- Alex Pantis of Beaconsfield, Que., made a triumphant return from injury to score a pair of tries and lead McGill past the Montreal Carabins 24-5 in the Quebec University men's rugby season finale, Sunday, at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

McGill, which posted a 5-1 record -- an an umblemished 4-0 mark at home --  to finish second in the seven-team RSEQ conference, will host third-seeded Ottawa (3-3) in a sudden-death semifinal on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 1 p.m.

In the other semi, slated to be played at the same time, fourth-place Montreal (2-3-1) will confront division-leading Concordia (6-0).

They were the first two tries of the season for Pantis, a senior all-star who had missed the previous two contests with an undisclosed injury.

Rookie fly-half Monty Weatherall, a native of the United Kingdom who led the team with 47 points in six games and finished fourth in the league scoring race, contributed seven points with a penalty kick and a pair of conversions.

Rounding out the McGill scoring was Conor Scully, an exchange student from Cork, in southern Ireland, with one try and Elliot Esposito-Menard, a junior from Madrid, with one conversion.

The lone Carabins scoring play was the result of an unconverted try from Thibault Le Coz.
