MONTREAL -- Victoria Sturgess of Quakertown, Penn., netted the winning tally as McGill came away with a 2-1 road victory over the UQAM Citadins in women's soccer at Stade Saputo, Friday.

The result improved McGill's record to 2-1-0 and moved the Martlets into sole possession of third-place in the eight-team RSEQ conference, one point out ofa three-way tie for first and two points ahead of UQAM, which dropped to fifth place at 1-1-1.

Midfielder Stefania Folino, a fifth-year civil engineering senior from Montreal, opened the scoring for McGill in the 25th minute of play. She converted a long through-ball from freshman Leah Simon of Mississauga, which went over the heads of the UQAM defenders

"It was a really nice play, with Folino's timing of the run and a composed shot to finish," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes.

Sturgess, a 19-year-old bioengineering sophomore, made it 2-0 just 10 minutes later. A 5-foot-10 striker who only tallied once in 13 contests as a freshman, she now has three markers this season and ranks third among RSEQ goal scorers. She was selected as the McGill female athlete of the week on Sept. 3.

"We took a corner into the box and it deflected off a UQAM defender but Victoria was in the right spot at the right time to put it away," noted Valdes.

UQAM narrowed the gap to 2-1 after the intermission when Estel Belval converted a corner kick in the 58th minute.

"We had a shaky start as UQAM was prepared to counter our offence," said Valdes. "It took us close to 15 minutes to find the open spaces on the field. We then adjusted our midfielders and settled into a good rhythm, moving the ball up-field with more confidence. In the second half, we also had some shaky moments but made some substitutions, which solidified our play and we regained control."

McGill held a 6-3 advantage in shots on net as goalkeeper Sarah Dubois turned aside a pair to collect the victory, while Léa Palacio-Tellier, her UQAM counterpart, registered four saves in a losing cause.

Player-of-the-game honours, selected by the opposing coaches, went to Toronto native Noemie Briollais (McGill) and Julia Liguori (UQAM).

The Martlets will have a short period to prepare for their next contest on Wednesday, when they will host undefeated UQTR (2-0-1), which is coming off an impressive 1-1 draw at Laval. The key matchup against the Patriotes is slated for Percival Molson Stadium at 6:30 p.m., followed by the men's game.
