MONTREAL – Jessen Gibbs, a 20-year-old arts junior from White Rock, B.C., tallied two second-half tries as McGill cruised to a 37-3 rout, Friday, over their crosstown rivals from Ecole technique supérieure, better known as the ETS Piranhas. The game, played before a boisterous crowd of 531 at Percival Molson Stadium, kicked off McGill's 118th season of men's rugby.

The Redmen never trailed although the teams were knotted at 3-3 after trading penalty kicks in the first 14 minutes. McGill led 8-3 at halftime but exploded for five tries in the second stanza to finish with 34 unanswered points.

McGill racked up six tries, five of them in each half, to qualify for a bonus point in the RSEQ standings, which rewards both high and low-scoring games.

Gibbs, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound centre, broke open a 13-3 score to put McGill ahead 20-3 in the 45th minute of play. He then added another try five minutes later, increasing McGill's advantage to 32-3.

Other try scores for the Redmen included fifth-year senior Sayf Al-Omaishi of Markham, Ont., in the first half, in addition to second-half majors from junior Alexander Pantis of Beaconsfield, Que., freshman Andreas Dionisopoulos of Montreal and Munir Yalin, an economics senior who hails from Istanbul. Rounding out the McGill onslaught was a 20-yard penalty-kick from senior Jean-Pierre Nixon of Hong Kong, to open the scoring and a pair of conversions made by Owen Cumming, a freshman fly-half from Toronto.

The only ETS point-getter was Lambert Leduc, whose impressive 40-yard penalty-kick tied the score at 3-3 in the 14th minute.

The only downside to McGill's victory was a rare red card, issued to junior Antoine Guay in the 40th minute for engaging in fisticuffs. That will translate into an automatic one-game suspension.

After a three-year experiment with two divisions of three teams, the RSEQ has reverted back to one division with the addition of a seventh team -- the Ottawa Gee-Gees. the top four will qualify for playoffs.

The Piranhas (0-1) will play next on Sept. 21 when they host Concordia (1-0). McGill is of until Sept. 28, when they travel to Lennoxville, to confront Bishop's. The Gaiters (0-0) will open their campaign on Sunday in Ottawa (0-0).
