QUEBEC CITY -- Veteran
Stefania Folino scored the winner in the 84th minute and goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois made eight saves as McGill came from behind to hand Laval their first loss of the season, a 2-1 decision in RSEQ women's soccer at Stade PEPS, Sunday afternoon.
It was Laval's first defeat at home in six years -- dating back to Sept. 9, 2012 when McGill registered a 3-1 decision -- and snapped an 11-0-1 undefeated streak that the Rouge et Or had against racked up McGill, including 11 consecutive wins.
"I'm really happy with how we performed and had trust in our game-plan, which is not an easy one against that team," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, who hadn't seen his troops defeat Laval in his five years at the helm. "We pressed and did not give them much space. It was a high-risk plan and we got the reward."
Laval had 5-3 edge in corners but an 8-3 disadvantage in fouls called.
"We asked a lot from our team today. Our midfielders ran their butts off because Laval uses a lot of movement when attacking. Our fullbacks had to track numerous key players. Our centre-backs (were assigned the task of taking) care of one of the top scorers in the league and our forwards had to work non-stop. They were all good, kept up the pressure, and when we made substitutions in the second half, they came in and were able to maintain the pressure and pushed the pace even further."
The Rouge et Or had a 16-12 margin in attempted shots and a 9-6 difference in shots on net, but Dubois, a 5-foot-8 chemical engineering senior from Edmonton, was equal to the task and merited the victory. She improved her record to 3-1-1 and lowered her goals-against average to 1.40.
"Sarah made some big stops for us, including a number of reactionary-type saves that kept us in the game," noted Valdes.
Laval's
Kim Tremblay opened the scoring in the 20th minute but McGill evened the count at 1-1 when
Tia Lore, a sociology senior from Richmond, B.C., scored in the 43rd minute. She intercepted a pass back from a Laval midfielder -- which was intended for her goalkeeper
Marie-Joelle Vandal -- then sprinted on a breakaway, dribbled the towards the 'keeper and found an opening in the net.
The winning tally came on a transition from defence to offence. Lore, a forward, was on the wide side of the field and pushed the ball past the Laval defensive line while Folino, a 22-year-old civil engineering senior from Montreal, courageously sprinted toward the on-rushing goalie. The 5-foot-4 midfielder just got a toe on the ball a split-second before the Laval 'keeper.
McGill (3-1-1) will host last-place Bishop's (0-4-1) on Friday at Percival Molson Stadium (7 p.m.). The Martlets hold a lifetime 51-0-2 record over the Gaiters since Bishop's joined the league in 1992. However, one of those ties occurred last season in Lennoxville, Que., when freshman
Ariane Ducharme scored in the 88th minute as McGill salvaged a point in the game.
