McGill track team strikes gold four times at Redmen Open meet

MONTREAL -- The McGill track and field team struck gold four times at the Redmen Classic, a two-day open meet that also housed a provincial championship for the Federation d'Athletisme du Quebec, and and concluded Sunday at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the McGill campus.

The Redmen finished atop the podium in the 60-metre hurdles and the 4x800m relay, while the Martlets won the 3000m and also captured the 4x800m relay.

Matthew Daly, a 20-year-old political science freshman from Pte. Claire, Que., took the 60m hurdles in 8.48 seconds. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound sprinter was two-tenths of a second shy of the school record (8.27).

The winning 4x800 relay, which completed the race in 8:17.01, was composed of Jeremy Obrand of Montreal, Thomas Csisztu of Pembroke, Ont., and Hugo Schutzberg of Cambridge, Mass., -- all freshmen -- as well as senior Santiago Bessai of Toronto., who ran the anchor leg.

On the women's side, Delphine Hansen, a third-year medical student from Montreal, won the 3000m in 10:44.11

The Martlets winning 4x800 featured sophomore Murielle Aglot of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., Lianne van Es, an exchange student from the Netherlands, sophomore Chloe Fleurent-Gregoire of Laval, Que., and Morgane Butler, a junior from Sudbury, Ont.

McGill, which has yet to qualify any athlete for the U SPORTS national championships in Windsor, Ont., March 8-10, will have one more shot to do so when they travel to Sherbrooke for the RSEQ championships, Feb. 23-24, where all gold medalists automatically merit a spot at Nationals.
