MONTREAL -- Three different players scored tries as the McGill men's rugby team remained undefeated with a 21-6 road victory over the Montreal Carabins to kickoff the long Thanksgiving Day weekend at Terrain Vincent d'Indy, on Friday.
It was the sixth straight victory in regular season play for the Redmen, including the final three contests of last year. McGill now sits second in the RSEQ standings with a 3-0 record and holds a game in hand on division-leading Concordia (4-0) . The result also marked the third straight win over UdeM since a 25-15 loss in the 2016 RSEQ championship game. McGill improved to 10-3 lifetime versus the cross-town rival Carabins..
Montreal jumped into an early 6-0 lead on pair of penalty kicks by fullback
François Dufeigneux, only to see McGill rally with 21 unanswered points.
McGill, which led 14-6 at halftime, had tries from
Benjamin Russell, a freshman fullback from Chichester, England, senior scrum-half
Spencer Main of Port Hope, Ont., and freshman
Paul Bourgogne, a native of Houston, Texas.
Elliot Esposito-Menard, a management sophomore from Madrid, Spain, converted each try for a team-high six points.
Both sides were assessed a yellow card, with
Pierre Grison being flagged for McGill and and
William Lynn receiving the infraction for Montreal.
Montreal, which sits last in the seven-team Quebec conference with a 0-3 record, will look for their first victory on Oct. 12 when they play at Sherbrooke (2-2) in a 7 p.m. start.
McGill (3-0), which has three games remaining before playoffs, will host Ottawa (1-2) on Sunday, Oct. 14 to close out Homecoming Week on the campus. Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. Then the much-awaited first-place showdown with Concordia (4-0) is slated for Oct. 19, followed by the regular season finale at Sherbrooke (2-2) on Oct. 28.
