MONTREAL -- Jonathan Banks tallied 13 points as Concordia surprised McGill 38-10 to open the RSEQ men's rugby season, Sunday, at Percival Molson Stadium.

Combined with the Laval-McGill women's game, the doubleheader was played in front of 505 fans, believed to be a school record for a regular-season rugby contest.

It was the first Stingers regular-season victory over their cross-town rivals in four years, snapping McGill's 4-0-1 streak dating back to a 19-13 ConU win on Oct. 25, 2013. Last year, the Redmen swept both meetings by scores of 46-3 and 40-0.

Banks, a senior fly-half, earned his points on a penalty kick and five conversions.

The Stingers jumped to a 24-10 lead at halftime and closed out the game despite playing a man down due to a red card. Back row player Malcolm Baird was ejected after being assessed two yellows, for a late, dangerous hit and an elbow strike.

Hugo Liabeuf of France put the Redmen on the board with a penalty kick in the 19th minute. The six-foot, 195-pound bio-resource engineering senior later converted a try by teammate Sayf Al-Omaishi of Markham, Ont., in first-half added time.

Moritz Wittmann scored a pair of tries for Concordia while Johnathan Vatcher-Alaei, Jackson Marquardt and Nicolas Tronche contributed one apiece.

McGill (0-1) next visits Bishop's (1-0) at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15. The Stingers (1-0) will host École de Technologie Supérieure (0-1) on Sunday, Sept. 17.
