KANATA, Ont. -- Starting pitcher
Henry Dennis scattered just two hits and struck out six leading McGill to open defence of their Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship with a 4-1 victory over Carleton in the opening game of a doubleheader at Kanata Kinsmen Park, on Sunday.
Dennis, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound sophomore, allowed no earned runs and walked just one during five innings of work.
McGill stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring two runs on an RBI double by
Sam Groleau and an error.
The Redmen added one run in the third inning -- on an error that scored Groleau -- then followed it up with one more in the fourth.
Carleton scored their only run of the game on an error in the fifth inning.
Ravens starter Braden McGinnis took the loss, allowing a pair of runs on four hits in four innings. He struck out two, walked two and hit one batter.
He was relieved by
Alex Lajeunesse, the son of former McGill hockey player
Marc Lajeunesse, who shut down the Redmen while he was on the mound. He gave up one hit in three innings, struck out four and walked none.
McGill (1-0) plays Carleton (0-1) in the second game of the doubleheader at 3 p.m.
