Camden Lawhead of Lakewood, Colorado, collected three hits and a pair of RBIs as the McGill University baseball team pounded Carleton 14-2 at Kanata Kinsmen park, Sunday, to sweep their CCBA season-opening doubleheader.
The Redmen defeated Carleton 4-1 in the first game.
Lawhead, a mechanical engineering sophomore who was playing as a designated hitter, was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. He doubled in the second inning and singled in both the third and seventh innings. He was one of five Redmen with multi-hit performances. Others included
Sasha Lagarde,
Andre Lagarde,
Gabe Hamilton and
Sebastiano Scalzo, with two hits apiece.
Starting pitcher
Rocky Hroch handled Carleton's lineup with ease, racking up six strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs, three hits and four walks over 5.2 innings.
McGill, which pounded out 13 hits, scored in every inning except the first. They scored twice in the second on an RBI double by Lawhead and a fielder's choice. Then added two more runs in the top of the third. A steal of home scored
Sam Groleau tmade it 3-0, followed up by Lawhead's single, bringing home
Gabe Hamilton.
The Redmen added one run in the fourth, three in the fifth, three in the sixth to go ahead 11-0.
The Ravens finally broke the goose-egg with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but McGill bounced back with three more in the seventh.
McGill (2-0) plays the
Université de Montréal (0-0) at Ahuntsic Park on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
