Sasha Lagarde of Montreal hit a key RBI double and freshman reliever
Eric Broatch of White Rock, B.C., shut the door as McGill rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Concordia 5-3 in university baseball at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
The crushing victory a rare four-game sweep of the season series with their Sherbrooke Street rivals from the west end of town. Concordia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and one more in the second but McGill came back with two in the fourth, two more in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The Redmen took the lead in the sixth inning on an error after an RBI double by Lagarde, who reached base three times and scored once.
Broatch came on in the fourth inning, in relief of starter
Jack Pantalena and allowed just one hit while striking out two over the final 2.2 innings to collect the victory. He entered the game with McGill trailing 3-2 and threw 35 pitches, 23 of them for strikes.
Pantalena, who allowed three earned runs, scattered five hits, walked seven and struck out nine over 4.1 innings of work.
McGill collected six hits in the game, all by different players and freshman
Sam Savoie of St. Eustache, Que., walked three times.
Concordia starter
Sami Brochu was the game's losing pitcher. In 5.2 innings, he allowed two earned runs on four hits, walked six and struck out two.
Roberto Zapata reached base three times in the game for the Stingers. He singled in the first and second innings, scored one run and had one RBI.
McGill, which clinched the CCBA Northern Division pennant the previous night, improved their stellar record to 12-1 with three league games remaining before post-season play. They will look to sweep their season series with the Universite de Montreal (3-8) on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at 7:30 p.m.
Concordia, which dropped to 6-6, plays Montreal at Ahuntsic Park on Thursday.
