COTE ST. LUC, Que --
Adriano Petrangelo of Montreal, struck out seven batters in a complete game performance as McGill edged Concordia 3-2 to clinch first place in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association action at Gary Carter Park, Monday.
The victory improved McGill's record to 11-1 with four games remaining and assured the team of claiming the CCBA Northern Division pennant for a third straight season. Concordia and Carleton are both tied for second-place with identical 6-5 records. The best they could end up with is a tie with McGill but the Redmen hold the tie-breaker by winning the regular-season series with both clubs.
Petrangelo, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound righthander, scattered seven hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run and walking none. The anatomy and cell biology senior threw 98 pitches, 72 of them for strikes.
With the game tied 1-1 in the fifth inning,
Jonathan Duforest of Kirkland, Que., hit a two-run single to put McGill ahead for good. He also singled in the second to finish with a 2-for-3 performance and one run scored. Other Redmen with multi-hit performances were
Sasha Lagarde of Montreal and
Alex Levis of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Concordia closed the gap to 3-2 in the sixth on an RBI single by
Josh Heffel but Petrangelo put out the fire. Stingers starter
Shane Mullen was charged with the loss. In six innings of work, he allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two.
McGill will look to sweep their season series against Concordia when the cross-town rivals meet again on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Gary Carter Field.
