COTE ST. LUC, Que --
Gabe Hamilton collected three RBIs and pinch-runner
Zachary Aaron scored a walk-off game-winning run on a wild pitch as McGill rallied from a three-run deficit to edge Concordia 4-3 in university baseball action at Gary Carter Park, Wednesday.
Concordia built an early 3-0 in the top of the second inning on a bases-clearing double by
Dario Vincelli that brought home
Alex Hall,
Dan Paklarian and
Matthew Litwin. But McGill bounced back with one run in the third, two more in the fourth and the winning tally in their final at-bats in the seventh.
Hamilton tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run double to left-field in the fourth innning, cashing
Sam Savoie and
Christopher Stanford. The only multi-hit batter in the game was Stanford, who tripled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth.
In the fateful seventh,
Eric Dohm singled to centre and was replaced by Aaron as a pinch-runner. He advanced to second on a single to centre by
Alex Levis and moved to third on a ground-out by
Louis-Xavier Labrosse. After
Rocky Hroch walked to load the bases, Aaron came home on the next play, a wild pitch by reliever
Sam Belisle-Speinger. The loss, however, was charged to the previous reliever
Matthew Adams-Whitaker, who started the fateful inning.
Redmen reliever
Jack Pantalena collected the win in relief of starter
Henry Dennis, who only allowed one hit through five innings of work. Pantena gave up two hits and struck out six in two innings. He allowed no earned runs and walked none.
McGill, which improved to 9-1 with six games remaining before the post-season, sit perched atop the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association's Northern Division. They hold a healthy six-game lead ahead of a three-way logjam between Concordia (3-4), Montreal (3-4) and Carleton (3-5). The Redmen will make the 45-minute northward trek to Ahuntsic Park on Friday to play UdeM at 7:30 p.m.
