MONTREAL --
Laura Veilleux, a 5-foot-1 striker from Trois-Rivières, Que., scored twice, including the game-winner in stoppage time, as visiting Sherbrooke escaped with a 3-2 victory over McGill in RSEQ women's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.
The Vert & Or, who dominated the first half but were on their heels the rest of the way, now own a 9-2-2 record in head-to-head meetings since 2011, outscoring McGill 27-15.
Daphnee Morency of Boulder, Col., scored a goal and an assist in a losing effort for the Martlets. She set up defender
Lisa Perrett of Vancouver, B.C., less than three minutes after Sherbrooke opened the scoring. A fifth-year physical education senior who placed five of her team-leading six shots on frame -- Morency also netted an unassisted strike in the 67th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
"We had a huge effort from Daphnee and Lisa -- they were asked to do quite a bit of work," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, noting that the Martlets played much better after halftime. "We're disappointed with the loss but happy with the reaction of our players in the second half. We'll learn from this game to make sure that we have a full 90-minute effort next time versus a 45-minute performance."
Marie-Ève Jacques gave Sherbrooke a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on her only shot of the match. After McGill tied the score, Veilleux, a 5-foot-1 striker, regained the Vert & Or's lead in the 32nd minute. On her winning tally in the final seconds of the contest, she cut across the top of the box to loft home the ball over the goalkeeper's head. She took nine shots, including a game-high seven on target.
"Sherbrooke came out with a game plan that had an unorthodox attacking scheme," confided Valdes. "That threw us off quite a bit; we didn't really know how to defend against what they were bringing up on the attack, so we were a little bit unorganized in the first half and clearly unstable. At halftime we subbed in one of our centrebacks, made clear adjustments in our defensive setup and in how we were going to press. We didn't want to allow Sherbrooke to have as much time to move the ball as freely as they did in the first half. The energy was different. We also (pressed) and they turned the ball over quite a bit. That gave us the momentum and the belief that we were going to get a positive result from this game… It was just a heartbreaker at the end."
Losing goalkeeper
Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., made 13 stops as Sherbrooke peppered her with 30 shot attempts, 16 of them on goal. Her counterpart at the opposite end,
Alexandra Girouard of St-Hyacinthe, Que., turned away five of seven shots for the victory.
McGill (1-1-1) next visits winless Université de Québec à Trois-Rivières (0-3-0) on Sept. 22. Sherbrooke (2-1-0) will play Concordia (0-1-1) on Sept. 23.
