Box Score
COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Shortstop
Sam Savoie of St. Eustache, Que., scored four runs and knocked in four more as McGill rallied from a seven-run deficit to outlast the Université de Montreal 16-10 in a wild baseball game at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
It was the most runs scored by the Redmen in regular season play since they established a school record in a 20-4 victory over John Abbott College on Sept. 26, 2013. Offence was not hard to come by for either team as they combined for 26 runs and 23 hits, including nine extra base hits. Both managers seemingly emptied their bullpens in search of the winning formula, and deployed seven pitchers in the contest.
The Redmen, who fell behind by a whopping 10-3 margin in the third, scored runs in every inning, including three apiece in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, then added four more in the sixth. They pounded out 10 hits, four of them for extra base hits, collecting home runs from the bats of Savoie and second baseman
Sam Groleau.
With McGill trailing 10-9 in the fifth, Savoie hit a three-run homer to score
Christopher Stanford and Groleau. Savoie, a first-year physical education major who batted fifth in the order, reached base four times with a pair of hits and two walks. The only other McGill player to collect a pair of hits was leadoff hitter
Sasha Lagarde, a freshman from Montreal, who was 2-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Groleau, a second-year industrial relations major from Montreal, who walked twice and stole two bases, also smacked a three-run shot and came around to score four times.
Eric Broatch, McGill's third and final pitcher, merited the win in relief of starter
Henry Dennis, who was removed from the game after the first batter, on a hard-hit come-backer which bruised his non-throwing arm. Broatch scattered six hits over 5.1 innings and allowed three earned runs, striking out one and walking one.
Montreal starter
Marc-André Towner was pulled in the third inning after conceding five earned runs on six hits. He threw a whopping 86 pitches, walking five and striking out two.
Félix Veilleux, the fourth pitcher for UdeM, was saddled with the loss. He allowed seven runs -- four of them earned -- and three hits in 1.2 innings, walking three, striking out one and hitting one batter.
It was the third straight victory for McGill, which leads the Northern Division of Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association with an impressive 7-1 record. The Redmen will host Concordia at Gary Carter Field on Thursday at 7 pm.
