Duforest dominates doubleheader as baseball Redmen sweep Gee-Gees

DOLLARD DES ORMEAUX, Que -- Infielder Jonathan Duforest of Kirkland, Que., continued his torrid pace with three hits, three runs and four runs batted in, leading McGill to a sobering 14-4 conquest over Ottawa in the nightcap of a Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association doubleheader, Sunday, at Lake Road Park.
 
Combined with an 11-1 victory in the earlier game, the result gave the Redmen a sweep and improved McGill's record atop the Northern Division standings to 6-1.
 
Ottawa jumped into an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning but the eventual outcome was decided quickly as McGill exerted its will early and often, with three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to go ahead 7-2. The added two more in both the fourth and fifth, the tallied three more in the sixth.
 
Duforest, a physical education freshman who batted leadoff, went 3-for-5 at the plate. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound second baseman is now batting .500 on the season with seven runs scored and six RBIs in four games.
 
Teammates Sam Groleau of Montreal, and Sebastiano Scalzo of Laval, Que., added two hits apiece.
 
Ottawa's poor play in the field contributed to the loss. The Gee-Gees committed a whopping seven errors over the course of the game.
 
Starting pitcher Bryan Corona collected the win for McGill despite allowing four runs. He struck out seven, walked five and surrendered five hits over his five innings of work. Corona was credited with 17-first-pitch strikes.
 
Three Gee-Gees pitchers combined to allow nine hits, issued 10 walks and hit two batters in 5.2 innings before the mercy rule took effect. Ottawa starter Patrick Comfort lasted one inning on the rubber before the call to the bullpen. He allowed two hits and five runs.
 
McGill (6-1) will host the Universite de Montreal (0-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc, while Ottawa (1-4) hosts Carleton (3-2) on Sept. 14.
