KINGSTON, Ont – Rookie
Jonathan Duforest of Kirkland, Que., collected three hits, including a home run and scored three runs as the McGill University men's baseball team came back to edge Queen's 7-6 in preseason play, Sunday, at Megaffin Field.
The result gave McGill a doubleheader sweep and a combined 5-0 record against their longtime rivals from Kingston this season, including recent victories in both men's and women's soccer as well as in football.
Duforest, went 3-for-4, homering in the sixth inning in addition to singles in the fourth and seventh innings. The 20-year-old physical education freshman raced home for the winning run on an RBI-single by Quebec City native
Christopher Stanford to highlight a three-run rally in the final inning. Stanford, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound transfer from Franklin Pierce University -- an NCAA Div 2 institution -- went 2-for-2 in the contest, driving in one and scoring another. He is a 21-year-old catcher is majoring in International Development Studies.
Thomas Mienkowski was credited with the win for McGill. He allowed three runs and two hits over 2.2 innings, striking out one and walking two.
Redmen closer
David Juechter put away the final out to record the save.
#10 was the game's losing pitcher for the Gaels. He allowed six runs in three innings, walked two and struck out two.
Queen's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Hodge, started the inning off. The Gaels then tacked one more run when Hodge scored on an RBI double by
#16.
Queen's added another run in the fourth, scoring on an RBI single by
#21.
The Redmen also scored a run on a sacrifice fly by
Jared Kersh.
McGill, which improved to 3-2 in preseason play, will host the Montreal Warriors, an under-18 team, in another exhibition game on Aug. 31 (7:30 pm) at Lake Road Park in Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.
