Sasha Lagarde reached base four times and scored a pair of runs as the defending national champion McGill University men's baseball team opened their preseason with a 10-2 victory over the visiting Nepean U-18 Canadians, at Lake Road Park in the West Island region of Montreal.
The Redmen scored three runs in the fourth on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
Lagarde was 3-for-4 with a walk. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and sixth innings. Teammates
Zach Aaron and
Jonathan Duforest each contributed with two runs batted in. Duforest collected his RBIs on a two-run homer in the first inning.
The Redmen used six different pitchers, including starter
Sam Greene, who allowed one hit, walked none and struck out four in two innings of work.
Thomas Mienkowski collected the victory in relief, allowing one run over two innings. He struck out five, walked two and surrendered two hits.
McGill (1-0) now heads to Waterloo for a non-conference doubleheader against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at Betchel Park on Aug. 27. The Redmen will then head to Kingston for a doubleheader against Queen's at Megaffin Field, Aug. 28.
