Laval leaps ahead as Redmen fall back in key soccer matchup

MONTREAL -- Defender Gaétan Aubert of France scored the game-winner in the first half as No.6-ranked Laval blanked McGill 2-0 in RSEQ men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday.

It would've been Laval's seventh straight victory on the pitch against the Redmen dating back to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 27, 2013, but the streak was halted recently when it was discovered that Laval dressed an ineligible player in three of their victories. All have been converetd to 3-0 forfeits, one of which was a 4-1 win over McGill on Sept. 25, 2016 which ended the streak.

Aubert, a 5-foot-11, 167-pound kinesiology student, tallied his goal in the 29th minute, assisted by Nico Hernandez. Teammate Alexandre Larkin Vachon of Thetford Mines, Que., doubled the advantage in injury time with an assist from Mathias Drygala. Redmen goalkeeper Antoine Marchal, a 6-foot-3 management freshman from Montreal, made seven saves on nine shots.

Nizar Houhou of France stopped three shots to earn the clean sheet for Laval. The Rouge et Or had a 7-5 edge in corners and committed 19 fouls, compared to 17 by the Redmen.

McGill's Michael Makepeace was issued two yellow cards in quick succession in the 65th minute, culminating in a red card. The Rouge et Or's Bastien Aussems was assessed a straight red in the 73rd minute. Both will have to serve automatic suspensions. With two games remaining on ther schedule -- vs. Montreal and at Concordia -- McGill could finish anywhere from first to fifth in the seven-team Quebec conference.
.
The Redmen (4-3-3) will host Montreal (4-4-2) at 8 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Percival Molson Stadium. Laval (6-4-1) plays UQTR (6-2-2) that same evening.
