Stone kicks last-second penalty as Redmen ruggers nip Piranhas in see-saw battle

MONTREAL -- Will Stone of Toronto scored eight points, including the game-winning penalty kick in the dying seconds as McGill rallied for a dramatic 13-12 victory over École de technologie supériore in RSEQ men's rugby at rain-soaked Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

Tom Saurin scored all 12 points for the Piranhas, nailing four penalty kicks. But he also incurred a costly red card in the 80th minute after receiving his second yellow, for unsportsmanlike conduct, which led to McGill's winning kick.

Saurin had given ETS a 3-0 lead in the 20th minute but five minutes later, Stone, a 6-foot, 190-pound civil engineering junior, added a try to put the Redmen on top 5-3.

Saurin replied by nailing his second penalty in the 35th minute to put ETS back on top at 6-5 heading into halftime.

Eleven minutes into the second half, Michael Modaferri, a mechanical engineering student from Laval, Que., scored an uncoverted try to put the Redmen ahead 10-6. Saurin then added two more penalties, in the 72nd and 77th minutes, to put the Piranhas in front 12-10 with just three minutes remaining. Then disaster befelled them.

The low-scoring affair was a far cry from the first meeting of the season between the cross-town rivals, a 43-3 McGill victory on Sept. 18. The Redmen have won all five meetings against the Piranhas, who joined the league last season. McGill completes their regular season schedule with an impressive 6-1 record and a bye to the conference semi-finals.

The season wraps up on Sunday with the undefeated Montreal Carabins (6-0) playing at Bishop's (3-2-1).  McGill, which earned a first-round playoff bye, awaits the victors of next week's quarter-final matches to learn who they'll face in the semi, which is tentatively slated for Nov. 4 at Molson Stadium.
