AHUNTSIC, Que --
Louis-Xavier Labrosse scored the winning run on an error as McGill edged the Université de Montréal 7-6 on Monday in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association semifinal play.
The rubber match, played at Ahuntsic Park, gave McGill a 2-1 series victory, advancing the Redmen to the CCBA North Division best-of-three final against Concordia next weekend. The Stingers swept their semifinal over Carleton, 2-1 and 1-0.
Tied 6-6 in the top of the eighth, Labrosse, an economics freshman from Montreal, drew a one-out walk and advanced to second when
Sebastiano Scalzo was hit by a pitch.
Jared Kersh reached base on a fielder's choice and on that play, Labrosse came aound to score on an ensuing error.
Eric Broatch picked up the win in relief of McGill starter
Henry Dennis. Broatch, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound southpaw from White Rock, B.C., pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out two but retired the side in the final inning for the decision.
McGill led 2-0 after the first inning and 4-0 after three before UdeM narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the fourth. Both teams scored twice in the fifth and Montreal knotted the score at 6-6 in the six.
Simon Brisebois was the game's losing pitcher. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He walked two, hit two batters and struck out three.
McGill's offence was sparked by
Christopher Stanford, who went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. He doubled in the third inning and singled in both the first and fifth innings. The only other multi-hit performance came from
Sam Groleau, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Seven different batters had one single apiece for UdeM, which will still earn a berth to the CCBA national championships as they will host the six-team tournament, Oct. 27-30.
The best-of-three CCBA North Division final series is tentatively slated to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 12 noon and 3 p.m. If needed, a rubber match is schduled for Sunday at 12 noon. All three games will be played at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc.
