SHERBROOKE --
Marie-Ève Jacques converted a penalty-kick in the 63rd minute as the Sherbrooke Vert & Or survived a scare to blank McGill 1-0 on a rain-soaked field, Sunday.
It was a league-leading 12th of the season and 82nd career marker for Jacques, a 5-foot-7 senior striker who is the all-time leading scorer in the Quebec conference. She was awarded the penalty after McGill 'keeper
Cassandra Fafalios dove to make a save on a breakaway and accidently tripped Jacques, who stumbled but remained on her feet.
"It was a tough call to make but I think it was the right one," admitted McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes.
Fafalios, who also stands 5-foot-7, was carded on the play and almost stopped the subsequent penalty-kick, which deflected off her outstretched hand. The political science senior was a "one-man show" for the Martlets with a whopping 16 saves in the contest, believed to be a single-game school record for stops.
Sherbrooke 'keeper
Christina Arès St-Onge was called upon to make just four saves for the shutout.
Despite the lopsided shots-on-net tally, McGill had a chance to tie the game off a corner kick with about 30 seconds remaining on what appeared to a hand ball that deflected off a Sherbrooke defender but the officials let the play continue and time expired.
"The first-half hour was a bit of a scramble for us, so we played it safe at first and didn't take too many risks," said Valdes, who didn't want to chance it with Sherbrooke, which has scored 30 goals in 10 games, more than double what McGill has tallied (23). "After about 30 minutes, we found moments where we could move the ball well and had a couple of chances to score, especially in the last few minutes."
With four games remaining before playoffs, Sherbrooke sits third in the RSEQ conference with a 7-3 record, five points ahead of fourth-place UQAM (5-4-1). McGill, which dropped to 4-4-2, is currently two points shy of the final playoff berth but can catch UQAM with a road victory over the Citadins at Stade Saputo on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The Martlets will then close out their schedule with home matchups against Laval (9-0-1) and Montreal (8-1-1), followed by a road game at Concordia (2-7-1).
