COTE ST. LUC, Que. – Third baseman
Zachary Aaron scored four runs and knocked in two more as the defending national champion McGill University baseball team crushed Carleton 11-1 to salvage a season-opening doubleheader at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park, Sunday.
The Ravens surprised McGill 12-2 in the opener, exploding for four runs in both the first and third innings. They outhit McGill 12-7 and took advantage of four Redmen errors.
Aaron, a management senior from Montreal, had a busy day at the plate. He went 2-for-2, with a walk and a pair of doubles in the nightcap after going 2-for-3 with a run and a pair of doubles in the early game.
McGill, which had a 9-4 advantage in hits, took a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the first inning, then exploded for four more in the second, sparked by a three-run triple from starting pitcher
Robert Sedin, a native of Sunnyvale, Calif., who was a workhouse on the mound. The sophomore right-hander collected the win, allowing one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings of work.
The Redmen added another run in the third inning to go ahead 6-0 before Carleton replied with their lone run in the fourth. McGill added a pair in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
Other McGill batters with multiple-hit performances included
Camden Lawhead, a freshman catcher from Lakewood, Colorado, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Teammate
Rocky Hroch of Temecula, Calif., was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.
Braden McGuinnis took the loss for Carleton. He lasted just 1.2 innings, walked one, struck out none and allowed five earned runs.
In the opener,
Ethan Nodwell sparked the Ravens, batting 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Freshman
Sam Vandry-Groleau of St. Laurent, Que., led the Redmen with a pair of hits in three appearances to go along with a run and an RBI. The aforementioned
Rob Sedin and rookie
Joe Enea of Manhasset, N.Y., also had two hits apiece.
Carleton's
Kevin Park started and went the distance for the win, firing strikes on 49 of his 80 pitches. He allowed seven hits and a pair of runs in six innings, with three strikeouts and only one walk.
McGill starter
Henry Dennis lasted only 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and three runs, one of them earned. He struck out three but issued four walks. Dennis wa replaced by
Benji Kaiserman – who allowed one run in one inning – and
Justin Hii, who took the loss, conceding a whopping eight runs in 2.2 innings.
McGill (1-1) will host the Montreal Carabins on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
