OTTAWA -- A two-run homer by
James Pavelick and a 4-for-4 performance by
Sam Groleau, helped McGill overwhelm Ottawa 11-4 to sweep a rare tripleheader, Sunday, at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park in the nation's capital.
The triple-bill had been scheduled to make up for three games previously washed out by poor weather. McGill started the day with a 5-2 victory over the Gee-Gees, the continuation of a game that had been suspended earlier in the month with the teams tied at 1-1. The Redmen took the second game 12-7.
In the nightcap, Ottawa grabbed an early 2-0 lead In the top of the third but McGill responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, sparked by an RBI single from
Tyler Welence and an RBI double by Groleau, his first of three extra-base hits.
A wild fourth inning, highlighted by McGill's six-run outburst, was the turning point, with Pavelick\s homer and another RBI double from Groleau. Also contributing offensively was
Zachary Aaron, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
The Redmen added three more runs in the sixth.
Starting Redmen pitcher
Shane Curran recorded the win, allowing four runs over five innings. He struck out one, walked none and surrendered six hits. Ottawa starter
Shawn English lasted just 2.2 innings and took the loss. He walked one, struck out two and allowed two runs.
McGill, which improved to 6-3 in the CCBA Northern Division standings, now sits tied with Carleton (7-4) for second place, one game behind Concordia (7-2). The Redmen will clash with Concordia on Tuesday (Sept. 29, 7:30 pm) on Gary Carter Field at Trudeau Park in Cote St. Luc.
