NCAA's Knights win joust with hockey Martlets in cross-border excursion

POTSDAM, NY -- Four different Golden Knights scored goals as the Clarkson University women's hockey team opened their preseason with a 4-1 victory over McGill in exhibition play at Cheel Arena on Saturday.

It dropped McGill's record to 39-57-7 in 103 games against NCAA opponents since 1997.

Senior captain Shannon MacAulay of Mt. Herbert, P.E.I., led the way offensively with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Brielle Bellerive of North Vancouver, B.C., and freshmen Emma Keenan of Calgary, Alta., and Kelly Mariani of Mississauga, Ont., also scored.

Olivia Atkinson, an Arts & Science freshman from Toronto, tallied her first career goal for the Martlets, converting a pass from Melodie Daoust midway through the first period, which narrowed the gap to 2-1.


Goaltender Shea Tiley of Owen Sound, Ont., and McKenzie Johnson of Eden Prairie, Minn., combined for 17 saves as Clarkson outshot the Martlets 28-18.

Between the pipes for McGill was Brittany Smrke of Oakville, who saved 24 of 28 shots and took the loss.

Clarkson was 1-for-4 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-4.

The Knights took a 3-1 first-period lead with Keenan, Bellerive and MacAulay scoring. After a scoreless second period Mariani closed out the win with Clarkson's fourth goal early in the final frame.

Clarkson, ranked fifth in the USCHO.com preseason poll, will begin NCAA action next weekend when they play archrival St. Lawrence in a non-conference home-and-home series.

McGill, which dropped to 1-5 in preseason action, will play Vermont
at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Sunday at 2 p.m. The Catamounts were predicted to finish seventh in a Hockey East preseason poll. The Martlets are 5-1-1 lifetime against Vermont, including a 4-0 win at Vermont last season.
