Hockey Martlets erase early two-goal deficit to edge Ravens 5-4

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

OTTAWA — Rearguard Mia Giles of  Hammonds Plains, N.S., scored at 6:33 of overtime as the McGill Martlets rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the Carleton Ravens 5-4 in women's university preseason hockey at the CU Icehouse, Friday.

Giles, a science senior, also had an assist for a two-point night as McGill improved its preseason record to 2-2. Taylor Garcia assisted on the winning goal for her second helper of the game.

The Martlets trailed 2-0 less than seven minutes into the contest before scoring twice in a span of 77 seconds late in the opening period.

Silken Nicholas opened the scoring for Carleton at 1:46 and Erica Buckley doubled the lead at 6:29. Elodie Boutin cut the deficit in half at 14:55 before Meganne Chailler tied the game at 16:12.

Sadie Lovering gave McGill its first lead with a power-play goal at 3:59 of the second period. Avery Krawchuk replied at 11:55 to send the teams into the second intermission tied 3-3.

Chloe Blanchard restored McGill's lead at 8:43 of the third period, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the preseason. But Macyn Driver pulled the Ravens even at 13:09 and neither side could break the deadlock before the end of regulation.

Giles finally settled the affair in the seven-minute extra period, converting a setup from Garcia to give McGill its second victory of the preseason.

Chailler finished with a goal and an assist, while Garcia collected two assists. Five different players accounted for McGill's five goals.

The Martlets held a 35-30 advantage in shots and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Carleton was held scoreless on three opportunities with the extra attacker.

Megane Pilon stopped 26 of 30 shots over 66:33 to earn the victory for McGill. Carleton's Emily Davidson made 30 saves on 35 shots in a losing cause.

Carleton (0-1) will host Laval on Saturday at 7 p.m. McGill (2-2) returns home to conclude its preseason schedule against Queen's on Sunday at 3 p.m.
