MONTREAL — Chloe Blanchard of Drummondville, Que., scored once and added an assist as the McGill Martlets defeated the visiting Queen's Gaels 3-1 in their final women's hockey preseason game, Sunday, at McConnell Arena.
Katya Blong and Taylor Garcia also scored for McGill, which closed out its preseason schedule with a 3-2 record after winning three of its final four games. Daniella De Rango replied for Queen's.
After a scoreless opening period, the Martlets struck twice in a span of 31 seconds midway through the second.
Blong broke the deadlock at 8:32, scoring her third goal of the preseason. Blanchard doubled the lead at 9:03 with her team-leading fifth goal.
De Rango cut the deficit to 2-1 at 15:22, but McGill carried the one-goal advantage into the second intermission.
The Gaels pressed for the equalizer in the third and had a pair of power-play opportunities during the opening seven minutes, but McGill's penalty-killing unit held firm.
Garcia gave the Martlets some breathing room at 12:28, scoring her second goal of the preseason. Blanchard and Megan Kronwald drew assists on the insurance marker.
Blanchard's two-point performance gave the science sophmore a team-leading seven points, including five goals, in five preseason contests.
Queen's held a 27-22 advantage in shots but went 0-for-4 on the power play. McGill was scoreless on five opportunities with the extra attacker.
Martlets netminder Megane Pilon turned aside 26 of 27 shots to earn the victory for McGill.
Queen's used two goaltenders. Bronwynn Lee started and was saddled with the loss after allowing two goals on 15 shots. She was replaced at 10:13 of the second period by Sasha Garrido, who stopped four of five shots the rest of the way.
The Martlets (3-2) will now turn their attention to the RSEQ regular season and host Bishop's in their opener on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. Queen's (0-3) continues preseason play Wednesday at Ontario Tech at 7 p.m.

Katya Blong et Taylor Garcia ont également touché la cible pour McGill, qui a conclu son calendrier préparatoire avec une fiche de 3-2 après avoir remporté trois de ses quatre derniers matchs. Daniella De Rango a répliqué pour Queen's.
Après une première période sans but, les Martlets ont frappé deux fois en l'espace de 31 secondes au milieu du deuxième engagement.

Les Gaels ont tenté de créer l'égalité en troisième période et ont profité de deux avantages numériques au cours des sept premières minutes, mais l'unité d'infériorité numérique de McGill a tenu le coup.
Garcia a donné un peu d'air aux Martlets à 12:28 en inscrivant son deuxième but du calendrier préparatoire. Blanchard et Megan Kronwald ont obtenu des mentions d'aide sur ce but d'assurance.
Avec ses deux points, Blanchard, une étudiante de deuxième année en sciences, a porté son total à sept points, dont cinq buts, en cinq matchs préparatoires, un sommet chez les Martlets.
Queen's a dominé 27-22 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais a été blanchie en quatre occasions en avantage numérique. McGill n'a pas fait mieux en cinq supériorités numériques.
La gardienne des Martlets Megane Pilon a repoussé 26 des 27 tirs dirigés vers elle pour signer la victoire.
Queen's a fait appel à deux gardiennes. Bronwynn Lee a amorcé la rencontre et a encaissé la défaite après avoir accordé deux buts sur 15 tirs. Elle a cédé sa place à Sasha Garrido à 10:13 de la deuxième période. Cette dernière a repoussé quatre des cinq tirs auxquels elle a fait face.
Les Martlets (3-2) tourneront maintenant leur attention vers le calendrier régulier du RSEQ et accueilleront Bishop's lors de leur match d'ouverture, le 18 octobre à 15 h. Queen's (0-3) poursuivra son calendrier préparatoire mercredi, sur la route contre Ontario Tech, à 19 h.
