Box Score MONTREAL -- Five different players scored as McGill disposed of the visiting Royal Military College 5-1 in CIS men's preseason hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill, which snapped their three-game losing skid, came out firing on all cylinders, outshooting the Paladins by a whopping 61-19 margin, including a lopsided 29-7 adavantage in the middle period. The shot total tied the second-best output in school history but fell shy of the McGill record 80 shots -- also volleyed against RMC -- on June 14, 2000. The second period barrage also tied for second-best in the team record books and was three shy of the all-time single-period mark of 31, that same night 15 years ago.
After a scoreless openng period, McGill busted out with three goals in the middle stanza on markers from
Patrick Delisle-Houde,
Alexandre Tremblay -- who tallied what proved to be the game-winner on the PP -- and Ottawa transfer
Rock Regimbald.
The Redmen added another pair in the final period, with rookie
David Storto collecting his first CIS goal and
Jonathan Bonneau.
Sherbrooke native
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, the nation's leading goaltender last season -- with a 1.74 GAA and a .944 save percentage --Â finally got the call for his first appearance of the new campaign. He collected the victory, stopping all 10 shots faced over two periods of work, before turning over the reins to newcomer
Joe Fleschler, a native of Summit, N.Y., who just joined the Redmen camp a few days ago after two seasons with the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeurs. Fleischler, a 6-foot-5, 212-pounder believed to be the first American goaltender ever to suit up for the Redmen, was beaten once on nine RMC shots.
The Redmen went 1-for-6 on the power-play and erased all three RMC man-advantage scenarios.
McGill, which improved to 2-3, will wrap up their challenging preseason schedule with road games at UQTR (Sept. 27, 4 pm) and at Clarkson (Oct. 3, 5 pm) in Potsdam, N.Y.
