Box Score KINGSTON, Ont – Senior
Steph Schaupmeyer of Kelowna, B.C., capped a three-goal rally as the UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team surprised McGill 3-2 early Sunday morning to wrap up the Queen's Invitational Tournament at the Invista Centre.
It was McGill's first-ever confrontation with the upstart Thunderbirds, who have only qualified for nationals once in their history. Both teams posted an identical 1-2 record at the preseason tourney, which was won by the undefeated Montreal Carabins (3-0).
The Martlets, who had a 29-23 advantage in shots, went 0-for-6 on the power-play, while UBC was 0-for-3.
"We weren't real sharp today," said McGill bench boss
Peter Smith, whose troops were playing back-to-back-to-back with a rare 9 a.m. start time. "I don't think it was a physical thing but we didn't have a sustained effort for the full 60 minutes. We had some good things that happened but not enough over the course of the game. We learned some valuable lessons about ourselves and that game will make us better."
After a scoreless opening period, McGill finally broke the ice when senior
Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., squeezed a shot past T-Bird netminder
Samantha Langford of Pense, Sask., for a shorthanded goal,
The 'Birds then rallied with goals from rookie
Shiayli Toni of Saskatoon, at 16:55 of the second,
Nicole Saxvik of North Vancouver, at the 27-mark of the final period and the aforementioned
Schaupmeyer at 8:42.
Three minutes later, sophomore
Erica Starnino of TMR, Que., replied for McGill but the Martlets eventually ran out of time.
Langford made 27 saves and collected the win between the pipes for UBC, while McGill junior
Brittany Smrke of Oakville, Ont., conceded three goals on 23 shots and took the loss.
UBC will host an under-18 Team B.C. squad next week, while McGill (1-3-0) is headed stateside, to play at NCAA squads St. Lawrence (Sept. 23) and Clarkson (Sept. 26). The Martlets next home game will be a rematch against Queen's on Oct. 2.
