MONTREAL --
Anne Gauthier-Dussureault tallied twice, including the game-winner as visiting Sherbrooke used speed and tactics to score a 3-1 victory over the McGill Martlets in RSEQ women's soccer at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Sunday.
It was the third straight win for the Vert & Or over McGill since a 3-0 Martlets conquest in 2013. Sherbrooke owns an 8-2-1 record in head-to-head meetings since 2011, outscoring the Martlets 23-12.
"We came out hesitant in the first 20 minutes and before we knew it, we were down 2-0," said third-year McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, a former goalkeeper with the Redmen who knows something about keeping the ball out of the net. "They're a dangerous team that always seems to score on us and they're the only team in the league that has scored three goals against us, pretty much every single game over the last three years. No other team in our league has scored three on us, most of them haven't scored two againt us."
In fact, it marked the fourth time in five meetings during his tenure that the Martlets had conceded three or more goals in a game against Sherbooke, which has outscored McGill 13-7 during that span.
"They've got some super dangerous players, so regardless of whether Sherbrooke plays well or poorly, they've got three top-notch stars, each of whom have played for Canada at the FISU (world university) Games," noted Valdes.
Sherbrooke had a 10-2 advantage in shots on net, a 4-1 margin in corner kicks. The game featured 18 fouls, 11 to the Vert & Or, but no cards were issued by the referee.
Gauthier-Dussureault scored in the seventh and 18th minutes but McGill calmed down and picked up some momentum. They reduced the deficit to 2-1 when midfielder
Mary Jardin, a science freshman from Richmond, B.C., scored in the 30th minute, converting a pass from fourth-year striker
Daphnee Morency-Roussin.
However, McGill's balloon quickly deflated in the second half after Sherbrooke's
Audrey Lagarde tallied an insurance marker in the 55th minute to regain a two-goal cushion and close out the scoring.
Goalkeeper
Alexandra Girouard saved one of two shots faced to collect the win for the Vert & Or, while Martlets 'keeper
Cassandra Fafalios turned aside seven of 10 shots in a losing cause.
Sherbrooke sits atop the eight-team RSEQ standings with a 2-0 record and will host winless Bishop's (0-2) on Sept. 18.
McGill, which dropped to 1-1 in RSEQ conference play, resumes their schedule with a pair of road contests. They will travel to Trois-Rivieres on Sept. 18 to confront UQTR (6 pm), then play at UQAM on Sept. 20 at 3 pm, before returning home to the friendly confines of Molson Stadium on Sept. 26 against Laval.
