Box Score MONTREAL --
Guillaume Asselin scored at 56 seconds of overtime as the visiting UQTR Patriotes rallied from a two-goal deficit to eke out a 3-2 victory over McGill in CIS men's preseason university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was UQTR's third straight win over the Redmen, including a two-game sweep in the OUA East finals last spring. The Pats are 153-76-17 in 246 lifetime meetings but McGill owns a 16-13-0 mark in the last 29 confrontations.
McGill led 2-0 after the opening period on goals by rookie
Dominic Talbot-Tassi (4:37) and veternan
Patrick Delisle-Houde (17:42). But the Pats sprung to life early in the middle stanza to tie the score at 2-2.
Tommy Giroux tallied at 21 seconds and
Martin Lefebvre notched the equalizer on a power-play at 3:01.
There was no scoring in the third period, setting the stage for a shortlived overtime.
"I thought that we play well in the first and third periods," said
Kelly Nobes, whose record dropped to 151-64-3 overall in six seasons as head coach at McGill. "But there was a good lesson learned for our young group in the second because we weren't physically ready to start the period on time.
"Perhaps the guys were complacent with a 2-0 lead and for some reason, we were late getting out of the dressing room and it carried into the play. The Patriotes scored twice in the first three minutes to tie the game. We need to be ready to play, both mentally and physically, from the start of each period. Especially against good teams like that because they are savvy enough to take advantage."
The Patriotes had a 30-28 edge in shots, primarily due to the Redmen taking 20 of the 26 penalty minutes issued, which didn't help their cause. UQTR was 1-for-5 on the power-play, while McGill went 0-for-3.
Pats rookie goaltender
Sebastien Auger made 26 saves for the win, while sophomore
Karel St-Laurent (1-1) made his second straight start and took the loss, conceding three goals on 30 shots.
McGill, which dropped to 1-1 in preseason, will now embark upon an arduous road trip to the Maritimes. They depart via bus on Thursday for games against UNB in Fredericton (Friday) and Saint Mary's in Halifax (Saturday). Both games are slated to start at 7 p.m. (Atlantic).
"We wanted to play those teams, they are two of the best in the country and there's a good chance that both of them will be at the Nationals in Halifax," said Nobes.
