Cedric McNicoll of the McGill University men's hockey team has earned Capital One Academic All-America second team honours. The award, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognizes the top student-athletes in the USA and Canada, for best combining athletics with outstanding performance in the classroom.
McNicoll, a 25-year-old native of Boucherville, Que., joins defenceman
Mike McGurk of the Brock Badgers and wrestler
Steven Takahashi of the Western Mustangs as the only CIS athletes selected among the 20 male honourees in the at-large category for the College Division, which comprises the CIS, NAIA and two-year degree-granting institutions across the United States and Canada. There were no CIS athletes picked on the women's side. David Johnston as a CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian. Last month, McNicoll became only the fifth athlete in McGill history to merit Academic All-District status, which is a prerequisite for earning Academic All-America honours. Previous McGillians include football players
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (2013),
J.P. Veri (1991) and
Bruno Pietrobon (1987), as well as basketball's
Willie Hinz (1983).
On the ice, the 5-foot-10, 186-pound centreman tallied 34 points in 25 games with the Redmen, en route to meriting OUA East MVP honours and CIS second-team all-Canadian status. It was a banner campaign for McNicoll who also won the Bobby Bell Trophy as team MVP, the Forbes Trophy as McGill's male athlete of the year and was the RSEQ nominee for the BLG Awards in Calgary, where the CIS athletes of the year were crowned.
McNicoll made his debut with the Redmen in 2013-14 after three seasons at the professional level in the AHL and the ECHL, which followed a stellar junior career in the QMJHL.
