AHUNTSIC, Que -- Freshman
Emerson Dohm of West Vancouver, B.C., stroked a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to spark a come-from-behind rally as McGill clobbered the Université de Montréal 9-1 to close out the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association regular season at Parc Ahuntsic, Wednesday, clinching the Northern Division pennant for the second straight year.
The defending national champion Redmen, who outhit Monteal 13-1, finished tied with Concordia atop the standings with a 12-4 record but own the tie-breaker based on three wins in four meetings with their cross-town rivals,
McGill, which enters post-season play with 12 wins in their last 13 games, will now confront fourth-place UdeM (6-10) in a best-of-three semifinal. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday (Oct. 10; 12 noon) at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park at Cote St. Luc. If a rubber match is needed, it is slated for Sunday, 1 p.m. at Gary Carter Field but UdeM will be the home team.
"It was kind of a close one but we were were able to score some key runs in the middle innings, then put it in cruise-control for the rest of the game," said McGill head coach and field manager
Jason Starr, a former all-star infielder with McGill from 2001 to 2004. "We'll enjoy the moment today but get right back to practice tomorrow. A regular season title does't mean anything unless you back it up with a national championship."
Right-handed starter
Rocky Hroch of Temecula, Calif., survived a shaky start to collect the win. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound international management sophomore walked four of the first five batters he faced to fall behind 1-0 but gave up just one hit, the rest of the way for the victory. He walked seven and struck out three during five innings of work. He also did his part offensively, with a pair of hits in four at bats in addition to scoring two runs.
After Montréal jumped out to the early 1-0 first-inning lead, McGill rallied with two in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Dohm went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a pair of RBIs. After he gave the Redmen a 2-1 lead in the fourth, McGill followed with a four-run fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Jamie Fuoco. freshman Joe Enea of Manhasset, N.Y., and Matthew Schimmer, a rookie from New York City.
Fuoco, a mechanical engineering senior from Pierrefonds, Que., went 3-for 4 at the plate, and scored a pair of runs.
Felix Veilleux took the loss in relief of starter Olivier Giguere. He gave up six runs (four earned) seven hits and a pair of walks.
