Roberto Zapata hit a walk-off-the-field RBI-single to centrefield that scored
Matthew Litwin from third base as Concordia rallied to defeated McGill 8-7 in the eighth inning of a crucial men's university baseball game at Trudeau Park, Monday.
The victory snapped McGill's win streak at 11 and extended the Stingers streak to five. It was the final game of the regular season for Concordia, which moved into sole possession of first place, with a half-game lead over McGill in the CCBA Northern Division standings. The Redmen can force a tie and clinch the pennant with a victory over the University of Montreal in their season finale, slated for Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Ahuntsic Park (7:30 p.m.). McGill holds the tie-breaker over the Stingers with three wins in four meetings.
It was a back-and-forth affair that featured six lead changes. The Stingers banged out a dozen hits against the arm-weary Redmen, who have been forced to play a challenging 12 games in 13 days -- including a tripleheader -- because of numerous rain-outs.
Zapata was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk, batting from the leadoff spot. He collected three RBIs and scored one run. Teammate Jonathan Duforest was 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBIs.
Rocky Hroch and Joe Enea both went 2-4 for the Redmen. Hroch smacked double in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Teammate Jamie Fuoco was 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBIs, while Rob Sedin was 1-for-4, with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
Reliever Dustin White, the third Stingers pitcher to work, registered the win. He struck out two and allowed one hit in two innings.
Owen Ryan, McGill's fourth pitcher of the evening was saddled with the loss. he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings.
