MONTREAL -- Freshman Sam Groleau of St. Laurent, Que., scored three times and knocked in two others as McGill outlasted Carleton 12-8 at Trudeau Park, Sunday, to sweep a doubleheader and stretch their magical win streak to 11 games, including 10 in league play.
McGill exploded for four runs in the first, second and fourth innings as the two teams combined for 22 hits, six of them for extra bases.
Groleau, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound infielder, singled in the first inning, walked in the second and stroked a two-run double in the fifth.
Collin Murray, a freshman from Lynnfield, Mass., collected the win in relief of starter Justin Hii. He allowed three runs over two innings, struck out three, walked two and surrendered four hits. Three runs in the bottom of the seventh helped Carleton narrow the deficit to 12-8 but Murray finally snuffed out the comeback, getting Ryan Burnside to strike out.
Reliever Kevin Park, the third of five pitchers for the Ravens, was charged with the loss. He allowed a whopping eight runs (three earned) in only 1.1 innings, walked three and struck out one.
Jordan Harcourt did his best to jumpstart the Carleton offence, reaching base three times. He scored two runs and had one RBI, singling in the second inning and doubling in the fourth.
The sweep moved McGill atop the CCBA Northern Division standings. The Redmen sit precariously perched just a half-game ahead of Concordia, with a game in hand and only two left before post-season play.
McGill, which has swept all three meetings with the Stingers this season, can clinch the regular season pennant with a victory at Concordia on Monday (Oct. 5) at 3 p.m. Should the Redmen lose, the teams would be deadlocked and McGill could still finish first with a must-win game in the season finale against the Universite de Montreal at Ahuntsic Park, on Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 7:30 p.m. The conference best-of-three semifinals are tentatively slated to start on Oct. 10.
