Box Score
OTTAWA -- Goaltender Maude Lévesque-Ryan posted a sparkling 37-save performance as the uOttawa Gee-Gees blanked No. 1 ranked McGill  2-0 in women's hockey at the Minto Sports Complex, on Friday.

It ended McGill's 19-game win streak against the Gee-Gees (including playoffs and tournaments) and snapped a 44-game win streak in regular season play versus the Gee-Gees, since a 2-1 setback in the nation's capital on Feb. 7, 2007. The Martlets dropped to 86-13-7 in 106 lifetime meetings.

It was Ottawa's response to a 5-0 shutout loss to McGill just six days ago in Montreal. The victory catapulted them to first place in the RSEQ conference with a 3-2 record, one point ahead of Concordia (2-1-1) and Montreal (2-1-1), two points ahead of McGill (2-1).

"We were out-hustled over the first two periods and despite a strong third, we're not going to beat a lot of teams in our conference if we're not working from start to finish," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, who indicated the the Quebec league is the most competitive it has ever been, from top to bottom. "It was a lesson learned and we'll do better next time."

Ottawa jumped on the Martlets early after McGill was assessed a too-many-men infraction just over two minutes into the game. Shanie Deschatelets made quick work on the Gee-Gees power play, firing a shot through a number of Martlet defenders that found its way past netminder Taylor Hough to give Ottawa the early 1-0 lead.

The Martlets pressed the attack early on in the second period. McGill's furious pressure led to the Gee-Gees being forced to take penalties in an effort to protect the net. However, the Martlets were thwarted by Lévesque-Ryan and a strong Gee-Gees penalty-killling unit, which blocked numerous shots.

Lévesque-Ryan's best save came with 1:25 remaining in the middle frame when she read a 2-on-1 pass perfectly, sliding from right to left and snagging the one-timer with her glove. The save proved to be a turning point, as the Gee-Gees extend their lead in the dying seconds of the period. Cindy Laurin poinced on a loose puck at the goalmouth and banked it in off the far post to give her side a 2-0 heading into the final period.

Despite a feverish attack in the final stanza, the Martlets were unable to find the back of the net..

Ottawa (3-2) returns to action next weekend with a pair of road games against Carleton (Nov. 7) and the Université de Montréal (Nov. 8).

McGill (2-1), will host the Carabins and Concordia, Nov. 7-8, respectively. Both games are slated for 7 pm starts.
