Box Score MONTREAL --
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., delivered a hat-trick and added an assist as McGill skated to a 7-3 triumph over Queen's in CIS women's preseason hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.
It was somewhat a surprising offensive outburst for the Martlets, given that they had tallied only eight goals in their previous seven games combined. McGill, which held a 42-23 margin in shots, led 1-0 after the opening period and 3-1 after two. The Martlets went 0-for-3 on the power-play and neutralized all five chances for the visitors.
Daoust, the Canadian Olympic gold medalist, struck once in the opening period and added a pair in the final stanza, including the game-winner. The physical education senior now leads the Martlets in scoring with six points, including four goals, despite missing half of the team's eight games due to a national training camp in Calgary last month.
Rookie
Shana Walker of North York, Ont., added a pair of markers for the Martlets, who also had singles from
Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., and
Stefanie Pohlod, a fifth-year senior from Calgary.
Replying for the Gaels was
Micaela Smith of Cobourg, Ont.,
Jessica Wakefield from Lucan, Ont., and
Addi Halladay of North Augusta, Ont., who also added a helper.
Sophomore
Kayla Loberg, a native of Toronto, made her first career start between the pipes for McGill and kicked out 20 of 23 shots for her first victory at the CIS level. Filling in as the back-up goalie was junior
Arielle Miller, a Montreal native out of White Plains high school in New York, who just joined the team as an emergency call-up this week in the wake of injuries to senior
Taylor Hough and junior
Brittany Smrke.
Gaels netminder
Caityn Lahonen of Sharon, Ont., went the distance and was credited with 35 saves in a losing cause.
McGill will face a stiffer test on Saturday when host the newly-named Montreal Canadiennes of the Canadian Women's Hockey League at 3 p.m. Formerly known as the Stars, the Canadiennes features a star-studded lineup that includes eight McGill grads, namely
Carly Hill,
Cathy Chartrand,
Chelsey Saunders,
Katia Clement-Heydra,
Jordanna Peroff,
Ann-Sophie Bettez,
Leslie Oles and national team goaltender
Charline Labonte.
