Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn - Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., scored twice and set up two others as McGill outshone Yale University 4-1 in a women's hockey preseason battle of academic superpowers at Ingalis Rink, Sunday.

It was the third game in three days for the Martlets, who lost 2-1 at Harvard on Friday and 3-2 at Dartmouth, Saturday. The result also extended McGill's win streak over Yale to five and improved their all-time record to 10-5-2 against the Bull Dogs.

Yale took a 1-0 lead on a bachanded shot by Phoebe Staenz at 8:37 of the first period but McGill roared back with four unanswered goals, including a three-goal outburst in the final stanza.

Davidson tied the score with an unassisted marker at 16:56 of the first, then assisted on the game-winner, a power-play goal by Melodie Daoust at 7:10 of the final period. Davidson then set up Stefanie Pohlod's insurance marker at 14:40 and potted an empty-netter at 19:18

Davidson, one of the top snipers in CIS hockey, got off to a slow start in exhibition play but is now hitting her stride as the regular season is on the horizon. With four goals and nine points in 11 preseason games, the management senior is now second to Daoust in the team scoring race. The Canadian Olympian has tallied nine points, six of them goals, in eight contests.

Yale, which had a 29-20 edge in shots on net, were 0-for-6 on the power-play, while McGill went 1-for-3 with the extra attacker.

Martlets goaltender Kayla Loberg went the distance and made 28 saves for the win, while Yale's Hanna Mandl took the loss, surrendering three goals on 19 shots.

"It was a bit of a sloppily played game today, both teams looked tired and it was a grind-it-out affair," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "The saving grace was that we finally got our offence in gear, got the win and had a solid outing from our goalie."

McGill, which was ranked No.4 in Canada last week, has completed their challenging preseason schedule with a 4-8 record, including a 2-3 mark against CIS opponents. They now turn their attention to their RSEQ conference opener on Oct. 23 with a road game against the No.1 ranked Montreal Carabins at the CEPSUM Arena.

The Carabins are 1-1 in league play in the wake of a shocking 2-1 home-ice loss to Concordia and a 5-0 road win at Carleton. The official Martlets home opener, part of Homecoming Week on the McGill campus, will be on Saturday, Oct. 24. Puck drop for both games is 7 p.m.

Yale (0-1) starts their ECAC regular season Oct. 24 at No. 7 Quinnipiac.
