COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Rookie infielder
Emerson Dohm of West Vancouver, B.C., smacked a pair of doubles and knocked in two runs as McGill cruised to a 10-5 victory over Carleton to sweep a doubleheader and the Canadian Collegiate Basball Association's northern Division championship, on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park.
Seven McGill hitters combined for 12 hits, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored in Game 2. Dohm, a 19-year-old arts freshman who went 2-for-3 with a walk, doubled in the fourth and sixth innings.
Earlier in the day, McGill won the opener 10-1. Both games had been slated for Saturday but were rained out. Had the teams split the double-bill, they were going make it a triple-header.
Both finalists will head to Fredericton for the CCBA championship, a four-day, six-team tournament, slated to begin on Oct. 22, where the Redmen will get a chance to defend the national title they won last year.
"It was a relief to get that series over with as we were running out of dates to get this done before Nationals," said
Jason Starr, head coach and field manager, who guided the first-place Redmen.to a 13-4 record in the regular season and four straight post-season victories. "This was one of the goals that we set for the team this season after finishing first but not winning the division last year. We had a good week of practice and our bats were good today (with 20 runs and 23 hits in the two games). Our guys are ready to go. We know what it takes to win... timely hits with strong pitching and good defence and we'll be okay."
Carleton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first but McGill roared back with three runs in their half of the inning and never looked back. They added a run in the second, another in the third and then exploded for five runs in the fourth to go ahead 10-2. Carleton replied with one in the sixth and two more in the seventh,
Righthanded starter
Robert Sedin recorded the win on the mound for the Redmen. He surrendered five hits and allowed three runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two. Batting leadoff, Sedin was also 1-for-1 atthe plate with a triple. He was hit by a pitch and had a sacrifice bunt.
Justin Hii and
Benji Kaiserman mopped up in relief.
The CCBA schedule for Nationals is expected to be announced on Monday and the Redmen will depart by bus on Wednesday morning for their trip to the New Brunswick capital. McGill hosted the CCBA tourney last year, where they won four of their five contests and defeated Concordia in the gold medal game to collect their fourth national baseball title, including championships won under the old CIBA banner in 1994, 2006 and 2010.
