STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que --
Thomas Stokes of Vancouver, B.C., scored 10 points and made a last-second penalty-kick as McGill rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to hand the Universite de Montreal Carabins a crushing 20-18 defeat in men's rugby, Saturday. Due to advance preparations for Sunday's CFL game at Percival Molson Stadium, the rugby contest was played at McEwen Field, a well-manicured grass pitch located on McGill's West Island based Macdonald campus.
The victory extended McGill's unblemished record to 6-0 atop the RSEQ standings, while the Carabins dropped to 4-2.
Stokes, a fifth-year political science senior, made two penalty kicks and added a pair of conversions to spark the Redmen offence. He put McGill on the board with his first penalty goal at the eight-minute mark to give the Redmen an early 3-0 lead. But the pesky Carabins then scored 18 unanswered points on a pair of tries -- from
Nicolas Monlouis-Bonnaire and
Éloi Collignon -- a rare drop-kick goal and a penalty kick -- all by
Pierre Constantin -- to take an 18-3 lead into halftime.
The Redmen came out of the intermission with their own scoring rampage on tries by
Bernard Kaminski, a junior from Pte. Claire, Que., and freshmen
Sebastien Boyer from Montreal. Both tries were converted by Stokes, who then made the game-winning kick in the 79th minute.
McGill (6-0) can go undefeated in regular season play if they win their final regular season game on oct. 25, when they host Bishop's (4-2).
