COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Tyler Welence had three hits and a pair of RBIs as McGill defeated Université de Montréal 5-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader to draw first blood in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association Northern Division best-of-three semifinals at Gary Carter Field, Saturday.
The Redmen led from start to finish, taking the lead in the third inning with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly by
Jamie Fuoco and an RBI single by Welence, who also doubled in the fourth and singled in the sixth. McGill added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Alexander Levis kicked things off with a two-out single. That was followed up by Welence's double, scoring Levis.
McGill starter
Adriano Petrangelo recorded the win. He scattered nine hits and allowed three runs over six innings, striking out four and walking one.
For UdeM, Simon Brisebois reached base three times in the game. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the sixth inning. Montréal scored on an RBI single by Guillaume Jacques in the fifth inning and a two-run error in the sixth inning.
Gabriel Delisi was the losing pitcher. He lasted just six innings, walked one, struck out four, and allowed five runs.
Game 2 of the series is slated to follow in half an hour. If a rubber match is needed, it will be played at Gary Carter Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
